Why do I have to have an earth stake?
In the UK most areas have a system known as PME (Protective Multiple Earth). This is where the power transformer has the neutral side of the supply to the house connected to earth, and after so many poles another earth point is connected to the neutral. Your earthing is then permitted to be connected, somewhere near to the service fuse, to the neutral side of the supply. This provides you with an efficient earthing system. In France generally this type of earthing is not available, so you have to provide your own earth terminal. This earth terminal can be installed in several ways, but the resistance value of your earth point must be below a given figure. If it is not, and the install requires an inspection before it can be connected to ‘the mains’, the inspection will not even be arranged. An electrician will have to be employed to obtain this value as it is not possible to obtain this figure without expensive testing equipment.
